Posted by Prem Godara | 1/03/2009 05:55:00 PM | , | 0 comments »

The nonprofit foundation that runs the online encyclopedia Wikipedia announced on Friday that it has met its $6 million fundraising goal, enough to cover operating expenses for the current fiscal year, ending June 30, 2009.

The foundation operates the site without advertising as a matter of principle, making donations critical.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said more than 125,000 people had donated a total of four million dollars since he made an appeal for funds on July 1.

"In addition, we've received major gifts and foundation support totaling two million dollars," Wales said in a thank you letter on the website of his non-profit Wikimedia Foundation.

Wales said any further donations beyond the six-million-dollar goal would be placed in a "reserve fund, which will help us to offset operating costs beyond the current fiscal year."

In his donation appeal, Wales said that over the past eight years, more than 150,000 volunteers have contributed over 11 million articles in 265 languages to wikipedia.org.

Wales's online encyclopedia allows anyone with an Internet connection to make entries and edit content.

In a thank-you note posted on the site Friday, Wales told donors, “You have proven that Wikipedia matters to you, and that you support our mission: to bring free knowledge to the planet, free of charge and free of advertising.”

Windows 7 Leaked by Microsoft?

Posted by Prem Godara | 1/03/2009 03:16:00 PM | , , , , | 0 comments »

Windows 7 Beta 1 got leaked onto BitTorrent sites like wildfire around Christmas and many people got it as Christmas present from BitTorrent sites to see how the successor of Windows Vista will look like but the timing of the leak looks like it has been deliberately leaked by Microsoft itself?

The reasons which indicates Microsoft's hand in the leak are:

The leaked build hit BitTorrent sites right after Christmas when the Windows geeks had nothing better to do and bloggers and journalists had nothing better to write about.

The official Windows 7 Beta 1 will be released some time in January but this trial version will give people a good idea about what they’ll be getting because the leaked build is designated "7000," which strongly suggests that the code could be same as forthcoming Beta 1, or close to it.

Windows 7

This leak lets Microsoft to get ahead of Apple since Microsoft knows that Apple is preparing to release Snow Leopard at Macworld. Microsoft might have decided that an early leak might make its potential customers happy because they will get a good taste of Windows 7 few weeks earlier before the release.

This leak will give immeasurable marketing benefits because Google news search is already showing hundreds of stories related to Windows 7 Beta 1.

This time Microsoft has turned blind eye to the leak which looks very inconsistent if we look at Microsoft's past history in cases of piracy.

If you are already trying out Windows 7 Beta 1, then let us know how its different from Windows Vista?
