The recent domain hijacking incidents by unauthorized third parties were due to phishing and not because of any Gmail vulnerability, according to a post on Google security blog.
According to Google, the attackers had sent customized e-mail messages to web domain owners encouraging them to visit fraudulent websites, such as "google-hosts.com", so that they can collect their Google usernames and passwords. Once they had access to the Google mail accounts, they would set up filters designed to forward email conversations from web domain providers.
Google has recommended few ways by which you can keep your own Gmail account secure.
1. Always use HTTPS when accessing Gmail account. This can be changed from the "Settings" > "General" tab in your Gmail interface.
2. Enter your Gmail sign-in credentials, only if the web address begins with https://www.google.com/accounts..
